Johnnie Walker expands its blended whisky portfolio with a new expression. Johnnie Walker Black Cask is positioned as a permanent addition to the range, matured entirely in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels.
This approach aims to deliver a more familiar aromatic profile for whisky drinkers who lean toward bourbon. The sweet, vanilla-forward influence of American oak gives the classic Scotch blend a rounder and more approachable structure.
A Blend Shaped by Bourbon Casks
Black Cask brings together selected malts and grain whiskies from Glen Elgin, Cameronbridge and Roseisle. Crafted under the guidance of master blender Emma Walker, the expression is bottled at 43% ABV.

Roseisle, one of Diageo’s most modern and technologically advanced distilleries, plays an important role in the blend. Its clean and bright malt character combines with the ex-bourbon cask influence to create a more contemporary and balanced profile.
The aromatic profile opens with creamy vanilla, toffee and freshly cut apple, followed by layers of caramel, coconut, gentle spice and sweet oak on the palate. The ex-bourbon maturation adds rounded sweetness without overwhelming the malt character, while the finish lingers with soft oak and light spice.
A Bridge Between Bourbon and Scotch
Although the name nods to the iconic Black Label, Black Cask stands on its own with a more accessible and modern profile. The sweetness from ex-bourbon casks softens the structure while preserving the identity of a Scotch blend.
This makes the whisky suitable both for neat sipping and cocktail use. In classics such as an Old Fashioned, the bourbon-like sweetness adds approachability while maintaining a recognizable Scotch character.
A New Generation Blend
In recent years, Scotch producers have increasingly embraced American oak to create softer and more accessible profiles. Ex-bourbon casks bring gentle sweetness and broaden appeal across whisky categories.
Johnnie Walker Black Cask reflects this direction, positioned as a modern blend designed to attract bourbon drinkers while offering Scotch enthusiasts a smoother interpretation.
VOGGIA Perspective
The boundaries between whisky categories are becoming increasingly fluid. Scotch producers are exploring the sweeter character of American oak, while bourbon brands experiment with longer maturation and different cask styles.
Johnnie Walker Black Cask sits at this intersection. With its bourbon cask influence and modern blending approach, it offers a rounder profile for Scotch drinkers and a familiar entry point for bourbon enthusiasts.
