As spring approaches, Churchill Downs in Kentucky is once again preparing for one of the world’s most famous horse racing events. Ahead of the 2026 Kentucky Derby, which will take place on May 2, a familiar ritual also returns to the bourbon world: Woodford Reserve’s annual Derby bottle.
One of the most recognizable names in American bourbon culture, Woodford Reserve is once again presenting its classic bourbon with a special label design. The whiskey inside remains unchanged, continuing to feature the brand’s signature bourbon expression. What transforms the release into a collectible, however, is the label itself, designed by a different artist every year.
A Long-Standing Connection to the Kentucky Derby
The Woodford Reserve distillery is located in Versailles, Kentucky. Led by master distiller Elizabeth McCall, the team produces bourbon, rye, and other whiskey styles. Some expressions from the distillery are also known for their distinctive cask finishes.
Woodford Reserve’s relationship with the Kentucky Derby runs deep. Since 1999 the brand has been known as the “Official Bourbon of the Kentucky Derby.” In 2018 this connection became even stronger when Woodford Reserve took on the role of “Presenting Sponsor” of the race. The current sponsorship agreement is set to run through 2027.
The first Derby bottle was released in 1999. Early designs were relatively simple, but in 2003 the distillery introduced a new approach by collaborating with a different artist each year to design the label, turning the bottle into an ongoing artistic project.
The 2026 Bottle Designed by Anna Murphy
The artist behind the 2026 Kentucky Derby bottle is Anna Murphy, an England-born artist now based in Chicago. Murphy is particularly known for her graphic style inspired by blue-and-white porcelain aesthetics.
This year’s artwork is titled “Dress to Impress, 152.” The piece aims to reflect one of the most recognizable traditions of the Kentucky Derby: the bold fashion and celebratory atmosphere that accompany race day.

Red roses, long associated with the Kentucky Derby, appear prominently in the design, while the inclusion of the speedwell flower symbolizes good luck and safe travel. According to Murphy, the artwork seeks to capture the energy and elegance of the Derby’s celebratory culture.
In her statement, the artist described the piece as a tribute to the bold style and timeless traditions of Derby fashion. The intention, she explains, is to create a visual experience that leaves viewers with a sense of beauty and a little more wonder.
The Same Bourbon, A New Collector’s Bottle
One of the most interesting aspects of the Derby releases is that the bourbon inside the bottle remains the classic Woodford Reserve expression. The release does not introduce a new recipe or a different maturation process.
Instead, the collectible value comes from the design itself. With a new artist label each year, the bottles have gradually become a small but notable collector series within the bourbon world.
The 2026 Woodford Reserve Kentucky Derby bottle will be available at retailers across the United States starting this month, with a suggested retail price of around $50.
The VOGGIA Perspective
In recent years a clear shift has been taking place in the premium spirits world. Distilleries are no longer simply producing a drink; they are creating cultural narratives. Woodford Reserve’s Kentucky Derby bottles can be seen as one of the early examples of this approach.
Through the use of artist-designed labels, these bourbon bottles move beyond being just another item on a bar shelf. They become objects that sit at the intersection of sports culture, art, and American lifestyle traditions.
From the VOGGIA perspective, the Derby series shows how the bourbon world continues to evolve not only through flavor and production techniques but also through storytelling and visual design. Each annual release is therefore more than a bottle launch; it becomes part of a broader collector culture.
