The Dalmore distillery, located in Scotland’s Highland region, has long been regarded as one of the most recognized names in the luxury single malt category. At the core of the brand’s distinctive style lies one defining element: its long-standing relationship with sherry casks.

The latest expression of this philosophy is The Dalmore 17 Year Old, a new addition to the distillery’s core Principal Collection. Positioned between the 15 and 21 year old expressions, this whisky aims to present Dalmore’s classic aromatic profile with greater depth and structure.

A Maturation Process Shaped by Sherry Casks

The Dalmore 17 Year Old follows the brand’s signature multi-cask maturation approach. The whisky first matures in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels, a stage that establishes its foundation and contributes soft vanilla sweetness.

It is then transferred into three different sherry casks sourced from the renowned Spanish producer González Byass. Amoroso casks help balance sweet and dry notes, Apostoles casks introduce complexity and a subtle savory depth, while Matusalem Oloroso casks add weight, richness, and a lingering sweetness to the final profile.

A Richer Interpretation of the Dalmore Style

Bottled at 42% ABV, Dalmore 17 maintains the distillery’s well-known aromatic identity while delivering a fuller and more rounded character. Citrus, chocolate, and gentle spice—hallmarks of the Dalmore house style—appear here with greater maturity and depth.

According to the official tasting notes, the nose reveals Seville orange, orchard fruits, and warming wood spice. On the palate, flavors of poached pear, forest berries, sweet toffee, and glossy orange marmalade unfold, followed by a finish marked by dark chocolate, dried fruits, and lingering cinnamon and nutmeg.

Its Place Within the Principal Collection

The Dalmore’s Principal Collection represents the distillery’s core lineup, designed to showcase its house style through different age statements. The new 17-year-old expression effectively bridges the gap between the 15 and 21 year old whiskies within the range.

The bottle carries Dalmore’s signature silver stag emblem and is presented in a deep purple presentation box. The design remains consistent with the brand’s long-established premium visual identity.

VOGGIA Perspective

One of the notable trends in the single malt world in recent years has been the expansion of core whisky collections with more finely spaced age statements. These “in-between” expressions create new discovery points for collectors while offering enthusiasts additional ways to explore a distillery’s signature style.

The Dalmore 17 Year Old fits naturally into this approach. By preserving the distillery’s hallmark sherry-cask influence while presenting a more mature and balanced profile, the expression stands as a logical and appealing addition for those who already appreciate the Dalmore house style.
